I recently passed the one-million mile threshold in American Airline's frequent-flier program. That's not all miles sitting in a plane for AA's program, but it still represents a lot of flying.
Flying is really getting to be a horrible way to travel. My wife hates flying, won't do it unless she absolutely has to (like, there's an ocean in the way between where she is and where she wants to go). As a result our family trips in the US are either drive or Amtrak. My kids are by now very cynical about Amtrak's on time record (way to build up a long-term customer base there, guys!) but on the other hand, I think even overnighting on coach in a way is less unpleasant than domestic flying.

I sympathize with your torment.

I've been wondering about Amtrak for a family vacation -- if nothing else because the kids have never been on a train.
Thing is, I remember years ago, and Amtrak's schedule had a departure window of about eight or nine hours later than scheduled.
I'm sorry to hear it hasn't gotten much better during the intervening years.
